Commercial Hub & Maritime Gateway

Situated at the eastern tip of Pamban Island, Dhanushkodi served as a vital international transport artery connecting India and Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). A passenger ferry service transported travelers and freight between the Dhanushkodi railway station and Talaimannar.

The Night of December 22, 1964

On December 22, 1964, a Category 5 super cyclone hit the town with estimated wind speeds exceeding 240 km/h and a storm surge of 7 meters. The disaster tragically swept away the Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train along with over 1,800 residents and travelers.

Post-Disaster Deceleration & Preservation

Following the calamity, the Government of Madras declared Dhanushkodi unfit for human habitation. Today, visitors can examine preserved coral-stone structures including the railway station engine shed, police station, primary school, and Portuguese-era church walls.
